The Top Places of Mallorca – Top Highlights not to Miss!

Hello there! Are you traveling to Mallorca for the first time and are wondering, which highlights not to miss? Or maybe you have been visiting Mallorca before and are looking for some new inspirations? Then it’ great that I want to show you the top places of Mallorca! For me, these places are the absolute most extraordinary and breathtaking ones that I have discovered on the island so far. What I love the most about Mallorca is its diversity – you can find some incredibly beautiful white-sanded beaches here, but also those that are framed by rough cliffs with the most turqoise water you can imagin e. Its mountain range in the north not only has breathtaking mountain roads and viewpoints but also quaint villages. In Palma, you have jaw-dropping architecture to admire and on the markets of Santanyí and Alcùdia you can shop not only your week’s produce but also your next sundress.

FAQ About Exploring the Top Places of Mallorca

How to Get to Mallorca?

To get to Mallorca, most people fly in by arriving at the Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI). When booking your flight, make sure to book the right flight and don’t book a flight to Las Palmas in Gran Canaria. However, if you are staying in the South of France, you can also take the ferry to get to Palma!

Where to Stay in Mallorca?

There are countless amazing areas to stay in when exploring Mallorca. You can stay in Palma and book your stay in the incredible Can Bordoy Grand House & Garden. Or if you want to escape the city and retreat back to nature, you can stay in a finca. My two favorite hotels in Mallorca are located close to Felanitx, a city on the Eastern side of Mallorca. To me, it is one of the most beautiful regions in the world, with wonderful beaches, cute towns and beautiful restaurants. The Sa Nau Villas are a gorgeous space, close to the golf course Vall Dor for adults only that I could always return to. The Son Terassa Hotel can only be described as heaven on earth with its natural charm and breathtaking valley views.

A plea for a favor – Palma de Mallorca is a Spanish city suffering majorly due to Over Tourism. For many locals, it got too expensive to rent a space in the city, as apartments often get turned into Airbnb. That’s why I would like to ask you to book not an Airbnb for your stay in Mallorca but a hotel. There are many great options all over the island, and by making this decision, you are doing your part to make sure that tourism in Mallorca stays a healthy one.

When to Visit Mallorca?

Mallorca is a beautiful destination all year round. However, during the summer months, it often gets very overcrowded, and I try to avoid areas like the Serra de Tramuntana because of the traffic. Which is a pity because that is one of my favorite day trips in Mallorca. So my tip for first-time visitors of Mallorca would be to avoid the stress of peak season and visit Mallorca from April – May or September – October. During these months, you are most likely to have nice weather and fewer people on sight while exploring the top places of Mallorca.

How to Get Around in Mallorca?

The easiest way to get around in Mallorca is to rent a car. It gives you the freedom and flexibility to move around freely and explore the island at whatever pace you like.

Cala Pi

Let’s start this list with an absolute gem! The Cala Pi is a small beach in the southern area of Mallorca and with its surrounding steep cliffs and turqoise waters it is one of those beaches, that make Mallorca such a perfect holiday destination. It once got very famous its small lookout platform that made it such a perfect photospot, however the local authorities had to take this platform down due to safety reasons. But it would be a mistake, not to visit Cala Pi because it now lacks the right photoprop.

Valldemossa

One thing that I love about Mallorca is its amount of charming villages. One of the most picturesque towns and top places of Mallorca is Valldemossa. It is also probably one of the most frequented places, so it gets really hard to find a parking lot there in the summer, but it is so worth it. Right here, you can find so many beautiful small businesses, selling beautiful souvenirs or local produce and delicacies. Make sure to check out the „Mirador Valldemossa“ for some incredible views of the surrounding valley and see the vibrant gardens called Jardins Rei Joan Carles. Once you are feeling a bit hungry, have a coffee and lunch at the Barbaflorida cafè.

Cap de Formentor

When staying in the Serra de Tramuntana, there’s one place that you can not miss! At the northernmost point of the island, a lighthouse it standing on the steep cliffs in one of the most dramatic sceneries you can possible imagine. The Cap de Formentor is one of the top places of Mallorca. It looks like it came out of a movie and if you only visit one place from this list, let it be this one. You will never ever be able to see a better sunset than here. It is simply incredible.

Helpful Tips

  • To get to the Cap de Formentor, you will have to follow a very narrow and windy road. This is not for the faint of heart – you need to be a very chill driver, given how many bicycles you will have to surpass on very small roads.
  • During the summer months, you can not allowed to drive to the lighthouse. Due to heavy traffic and limited parking spaces, you can now take a shuttle bus.

Palma Old City

There are only a few cities that I love as much as I love Palma. It just has it all – a relaxing charme, incredible buildings – many in the Art Noveau style, a house designed by Gaudi, so many shops to go through and some of the best restaurants on the island. My favorite thing is to walk from the ramblas through the Old Town all the way to the Plaza Major. Usually, I turn around there and walk the way down again. The top place for a coffee is without a doubt the café inside Rialto Living, a cinema turned shop and restaurant. And for your lunch or dinner, many of the best restaurants of Mallorca are in Palma!

Sant Salvador

Hiking up the Sant Salvador is something for everyone who loves good hikes and breathtaking views. Going up there is for sure something for everyone’s Mallorca Bucket List. The whole path up is surrounded by dense bushes that all smell like pine cones. And with every turn, you will see another great view and if you are lucky, you will also spot some wild goats.

On top of the mountain, you will find a cross, a statue, a café and a monastery. The café is the perfect place to refresh after the hike and the next thing you want to make sure is to have a drink from the fountain on top of the Saint Salvador. Its water is said to give you eternal youth when you drink it.

And for those who are not too keen on hiking – on the top of the Sant Salvador you can also find a parking lot.

Santanyí Market

At the beginning of this posting, I promised you some great shopping opportunities, and here they are! On Wednesdays and Saturdays, the town of Santanyí has its market days and the whole center turns into a vibrant mess of visitors, stalls, shops, and cafés. Here, you can find beautiful dresses, flowing skirts, and colorful blouses, as well as jewelry, shopping baskets, and sandals. And even if you are not in the mood to elevate your style, you can also find the most incredible local delicacies and produce. The only downside to the market is, that it gets incredibly crowded super fast, so you want to be there early in the morning and stroll the stalls before it gets too crowded.

Caló del Moro

Once a hidden gem, now an Instagram-famous place, the Caló del Moro might be one of the most spectacular beaches of Mallorca. I think, it should be on everyone’s Mallorca Itinerary. Although small in size, the beach comes with breathtaking turqoiuse water that is framed with a green peninsula, protecting it from the ocean behind it.

Helpful Tips:

  • Don’t go there during high season. Due to its Insta-fame, it will be crowded beyond reason. You will certainly not enjoy it.
  • If you are looking for a beach to spend the day there, the Caló del Moro is not it. There is very little space and no beach bar or other facilities. I prefer going there for a small hike along the cliffs, but that is more it. If you are looking for a nice beach for the day, check out the Cala Llombards just around the corner.
  • To get to the Caló del Moro, you can park close to the Cala s’Almunia (another beautiful place) and walk there. Please just note that it is not suitable for people with limited mobility. You will have to climb a steep staircase and a rocky path.

Sóller

Another beautiful place that you shouldn’t miss when exploring the Serra de Tramuntana is Sóller. The mountain village is nestled between a few mountains and surrounded by countless fields filled with orange trees. The town is famous for them, and I promise, oranges never taste as impressive as they do in Sóller. Apart from the oranges, Sóller is also known for its iconic train. Technically speaking, there are two trains departing from Sóller: the wooden train that travels between Sóller and Palma and, even more exciting, the orange tram that connects Sóller and the Port de Sóller. In my opinion, the best way to take in Sóller is to visit the main square, sit opposite the church, have a cortado (Spanish coffee) and a gato de Almendra (mallorqín Almond cake), and watch the tram and people flow past.

Helpful Tips:

  • You can’t park in the city center. Make sure to park just outside the village. It is only a short walk into the center.
  • Be in Sóller early. It is very beautiful to see the place awake.
  • Every Saturday, there is also a beautiful small market on the main square with lovely local products.

Sa Calobra

Let’s stay in the Serra de Tramuntana for a moment! Only one of the most epic drives away from all the downs described here, you will also find the Sa Calobra. The small beach with the narrow passage is quite the spectacle. The turquoise blue water is magnificent and the beach itself can only be reached by walking a coastal path that is also part cave. It is very exciting and for those who are seeking a little adventure on top – you can also hike the enclosed gorge behind the beach! Just make sure to do so with a guide, because it can be dangerous to go there alone for hiking.

Alcúdia Market

Right after the market in Santanyí, my favorite market of Mallorca is the one in Alcúdia. It is one of the biggest markets of Mallorca and is filled to the brim with fantastic vendors selling fresh produce, local products, and, of course, a wide array of beautiful sundresses, handmade jewelry, and many more beautiful accessories and souvenirs. And not only is it the perfect place for holiday shopping, but the surrounding city itself is an incredible gem. With its narrow alleys and charming restaurants, shops, and cafés, Alcúdia is a place not to miss on any day!

Cala Deía & Deía

It is no wonder that the Cala Deía and its enclosed town of Deía have gathered a fair amount of internet fame. The dreamy bay and picturesque towns are pure showstoppers and wonderful places to explore. Especially if you plan to have lunch at the Ca’s Patró March, the restaurant in the bay. For that, make sure to check the opening times and make a reservation in advance!

Helpful Tips:

  • Cala Deía is one of the top places of Mallorca, but incredibly crowded during the summer months. Avoid it in peak season.
  • During winter, you can park only a short walk away from the bay, but during summer, you will have to park in the village and walk to the beach. If you have limited mobility, this walk will be hard on you – for it is very steep and long.

Cala Llombards

The last top place of Mallorca on this list is the Cala Llombards. Another breathtaking beach with an incredible beach bar. It is also one of the beaches that is perfect for summertime, as there is plenty of space for you to spread your towel. Just make sure to be there early, as it can get very crowded here. Furthermore, if you want to have lunch at the beach bar, make sure to have a reservation.
