Hello there! In this travel guide to Liechtenstein I will give you a detailed overview over a small yet wonderful country. Liechtenstein might not be a country that is on everyone’s radar. With only 160 square kilometres in size, it is one of the smallest countries in Europe. To be very frank and clear, my initial motivation to visit Liechtenstein was to check „traveled“ it in my „Been“ app. I know, i know, that is not the most honorable motivation but the important thing is that I went into Liechtenstein with that motivation but left it with impressions of a beautiful country that its inhabitants are so proud of. So now I can’t to show you all the top things to do in Liechtenstein from where to stay, where to eat and what to do!

When to Visit Liechtenstein?
It totally depends on what you are looking for! Are you in Europe to look at flowers bloom, or do you want to enjoy summer to the fullest? So make sure to come from April – August for spring and summer. However, when I picked a time for visiting Liechtenstein, I went for late September to get moody and autumny vibes for this trip and it was incredibly worth it.
How to Get to Liechtenstein?
As Liechtenstein was only one stop of a roadtrip through Austria and Switzerland, we got there by car. However, if you don’t have a car on hand, you can also get to Liechtenstein by bus. The stop you have to get to is called „Vaduz“ and is located directly in the city center. From there you can easily explore most of the attractions you can find in this Liechtenstein Travel Guide. The only places that might be a little hard to reach is the mountains but for this you can also hire a taxi, as the way up is not that long.
Where to Stay in Liechtenstein?
Looking at the prices for hotels in Liechtenstein and Switzerland, I decided that stay the night in Austria would make the most sense financially (just Europe problems, right?). The place that I stayed in for the night is called the Motel Keckeis Inn and I loved its easy self-check in and nice clean rooms. But the true highlight here was the breakfast that you can have in the enclosed bakery. Such a charming place!
However, if you do want to stay directly in Liechtenstein, check out the Giessen Hotel & Coffeehouse for a lovely option or if you are feeling fancy the Park Hotel Sonnenhof – Relais & Châteaux.
How to Get Around in Liechtenstein?
For the most parts, you can easily explore Liechtenstein by foot. Especially when you stay close to the Vaduz city centre. However, for exploring the mountain area of Liechtenstein, it makes more sense to have a car or hire a cab.
What to See in Liechtenstein?
Even if it is small of size, there are many places in Liechtenstein to discover! Mostly they revolve around the Vaduz’ city centre, which also makes it the perfect start for your day in Liechtenstein! Coming from the highway, I parked the car close to the St. Florin Cathedral and then made my way through and up the city with the Vaduz castle being the last stop on my walk.
Cathedral St. Florin
The first landmark not to miss in this Guide to Liechtenstein is the beautiful St. Florin Cathedral. It is a beautiful cathedral to visit, where many royals of Liechtenstein have been buried.
Liechtenstein Center
Once you have passed the cathedral, you will reach the city center of Liechtenstein. Right here you can find a few interesting museums such as the National Museum of Liechtenstein and an art museum. Furthermore you will find amazing souvenir shops with amazing gifts and even more books and flyers on Liechtenstein.
Aussichtspunkt Känzile
Leaving the city center of Liechtenstein behind you, you have two more sights left to see in city, before you just head of for the countryside of Liechtenstein! Next on this list, you head for the Aussichtspunkt Känzile, which is a viewpoint from where you can see the city from above including the surrounding mountains. And if you are lucky, you will even get a rainbow when standing there!
Schloss Vaduz
The next place on this travel guide to Liechtenstein is the Castle Vaduz. Right there, the royal family of Liechtenstein is living, therefore it is closed for visitors, but the surrounding grounds still make a beautiful scenery for a nice walk.

Stausee Steg
Once you have finished exploring the city center and castle, there is one more place in this Liechtenstein Travel Guide that you shouldn’t miss. From the city center it is only a short drive into Liechtenstein’s mountainside.
It is a beautiful strech of nature, ideal for you to go on a walk around the Gänglesee and breathe the fresh mountain air. We even got lucky and went there the day, where they brought the cattle back into the stables for winter and got to observe the almost festive atmosphere in the area.
We walked around until we got hungry and decided to go for a comforting lunch in the Bergstübli, where we had the most delicious Kässpätzle. Such a hearty meal is really the perfect addition to the mountain scenery!
