The Dreamiest Places of Germany - Traveling into Fairytales

Traveling these places feels like stepping into real-life fairytales. From castles that look like they were created in a dream rather than in reality to cobblestoned streets that are lined with half-timbered houses, Germany is the ideal travel destinations for those who like to wander into the fantasy world!

Schloss Drachenburg

Schloss Drachenburg is one of the lesser-known castles in Germany but without a doubt, it is one of the most picturesque there is! After it was finished, it served numerous purposes. First, it was a Catholic school until it was turned into a school for Nazis. After the war, it slowly decayed, since the current owner (the government) wouldn’t pay to restore it. Luckily Schloss Drachenburg was sold back to private owners, who turned it into the beautiful castle it is today!

Schloß Drachenburg is located close to Bonn in North Rhine Westfalia and you can best reach it by car or train! If you feel like staying in a castle one day, you can fulfill this wish and book a two-night stay in Schloss Drachenburg!

Reichsburg Cochem

The area around the Mosel Valley is breathtaking! You can drive alongside the river, admiring the hills that rise next to it, covered in vineyards. Only getting to Cochem is already quite breathtaking if you ask me! Yet the true gem of the Mosel Valley is the town called Cochem and its majestic castle! The Reichsburg Cochem is located on a small hill next to the town of Cochem. You can easily walk around it while getting some of the best panoramic views of the Mosel!

Schloss Neuschwanstein

Schloss Neuschwanstein might be THE fairytale castle like there is no other! It is simply the dreamiest place you can imagine. As if you fell asleep and woke up in „Beauty and the Beast“. Surrounded by the Bavarian mountains, it looks as romantic as it gets. Built by Ludwig II. as the perfect vision of a medieval castle, it is also one of the most famous tourist hotspots in Bavaria and Germany. It attracts thousands of tourists every day, so if you want to visit the inside of it, make sure to book your tickets in advance. For the best views of the castle, hike up the mountains behind the castle, especially crossing the Marienbrücke.

Burg Eltz

I fear this list will get a little bit dull since I am describing all of the castles like the “ultimate fairytale castle” but this phrase is so perfectly fitting to all of them. Burg Eltz might be one where it fits the most. Nobody could ever conquer or destroy it and therefore it still belongs to the family, who originally built it. Building it took about 850 years, turning it a witness of time. During the different epochs, it was renovated and restored but up to this day, it still has its Romanesque features. Burg Eltz is accessible via a parking lot. From there you can take a shuttle bus or go on a short hike, but if you can, I recommend hiking. It is an awesome one that is too pretty, especially during fall!

Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is one of the most famous places in Germany. It looks exactly like you would picture a classic German village and it does the fairytale vibes all the justice! Its cobblestoned streets are lined with half-timbered houses and walking them feels like traveling back in time. It is also home to the epic Christmas shop “Käthe Wohlfahrt” and the attached Christmas museum, which is worth a visit! One thing that you also shouldn’t miss when visiting Rothenburg ob der Tauber is having a snowball, the traditional pastry of the area!

Monschau

Although Monschau is famous for being incredibly beautiful and having one of the best mustard mills in Germany, I bet that its fame didn’t spread beyond the German borders. Through the quaint town of Monschau flows a small river and while walking through the town you will pass it serval times. Its half-timbered houses are incredibly cute and picturesque. When visiting, also make sure to visit the “Monschauer Senfmühle” and bring home some delicious mustard as a souvenir!
