How to Book Your Day Trip to Gozo?
When booking experiences like day trips or tours, I always opt to book via GetYourGuide. I just love their easy booking process and cancellation policy. When picking a boat tour to Gozo and Comino, you will have a wide array of choices. Our tour was with Hornblower Cruises, so if you want to enjoy all the amenities I describe, make sure to book their cruise.
When to Plan Your Day Trip to Gozo?
The better the weather during your day trip to Gozo is, the better your overall experience is going to be. That’s why I recommend going on this day trip between late April and early October to have a higher chance of sunshine.
What to Bring for Your Day Trip to Gozo?
If you are lucky, like we were, you will have a sunny day on a boat ahead of you. That means the one thing you can not fail to bring to the boat is sun protection. So bring your sunscreen, sun hat, and cover-up or you will most likely be fried. Furthermore, there are no free towels available on the boat. Therefore if you want to go for a swim, make sure to bring some. And last but not least – drinks are available on board but not for free. So bring some water too to stay hydrated. And if you tend to get seasick and need them, make sure to bring medicine accordingly.
Agenda For Your Perfect Day Trip to Gozo
Let’s get on board! Although we were blessed with incredible sunshine during our day trip to Gozo, we were not so lucky when it came to the wind. Due to heavy winds the days before our trip, our tour had to be adjusted for safety reasons. However, in this blogpost, I will describe the trip as it is usually.
Boarding the Boat in Malta
Once you have chosen your boat trip, check out where and when exactly it will depart. Make sure to be there early enough because you will want to save a sun lounger in the first row. I also always like to be early, just in case, to not have the other guests waiting for me. When you have secured your lounger, you simply have to check out their drink selection. My highlight was their „reusable cups“ in the form of a carved-out pineapple in which you could have your cocktails. Of course, we had to have one and maybe also more than one refill during the day. Although it was sticky on the hands, it remained to be a vibe!
Sea Cave Tour
The first stop on the way to Gozo will be along some sea caves on the shores of Malta and Comino. Here, the tour guide will tell you more about the history of the islands and the sea caves. This is also the part of the trip where you might experience some nausea, due to the boat being shaken.
Blue Lagoon
When you have finished looking at the sea caves, your next stop on the itinerary is the famous Blue Lagoon of Malta, one of the top places in Malta! Between Comino Island and three other islets, protecting the area from the rougher ocean surrounding is a natural pool. This place is called the Blue Lagoon. With crystal clear water and little to no current, this place is ideal for going for a swim, snorkeling, or hanging out on the sun deck of your boat, tanning while sipping on your pineapple cocktail. For those who aren’t keen on either swimming or sunbathing, you can also depart the boat here and take a walk exploring Comino Island. Although the water was still incredibly cold, we simply couldn’t not go for the water slide of the Hornblower!
Gozo
Once we were dried up again (and recovered from the cold water!) our boat departed for us to head for the next stop: the island of Gozo. To explore it, we opted to join an organized round trip to see as much of it as possible!
Dwejra Ocean Viewpoint
The bus took us straight to one very incredible place. A viewpoint overlooking Dwejra Bay and I just have to say that the ocean surrounding Malta is just a different shade of blue. It is such a deep and rich blue unlike at other places. It is very mesmerizing.
La Citadella in Viktoria
Once we took in all the ocean views, it was time to explore the second gem of Gozo – the Citadella! The Citadella is a fortress that has been around for a long time. It is believed that it was the acropolis for the Roman city Gaulos and was rebuilt and added to in medieval times until it was turned into a fortress. Today, it serves as a tourist site with a Visitor’s Centre, museums, and the cutest shops. Visiting it is like walking through history itself – from seeing the remains of the medieval city wall to the Cathedral and the fortification. But the most impressive thing about the Citadella was the magnificent view you get of Gozo from there. Incredibly breathtaking, if you ask me!
Leaving Gozo & Returning to Malta
After admiring the Citadella for as long as we could before we had to leave to catch the bus, we were brought back to our ship. We took our place on the sun loungers, had another cocktail, and relaxed on the way back to Malta, where we got dropped off at the harbor again. Oh, what a wonderful day to be alive!
