FAQ about traveling to Jaipur
When to visit Jaipur?
India is a very hot place all year round. The only time you can expect a milder climate is during the Indian winter from October – March. You should make sure to avoid traveling to Jaipur from April – June. Furthermore, don’t travel to India during the monsoon season from July – September. My trip to India took place from the 25th of September to the 7th of October. And we were very lucky with hot, yet dry weather.
How to Get to Jaipur?
If Jaipur is one of the places in your India Travel Itinerary, then you are most likely arriving by car or by train. As two women traveling alone, we felt most comfortable booking a private driver for the entirety of our trip. Chagan drove us the whole time, and having him there was wonderful. Not only is he an amazing driver with great restaurant recommendations, but he also went above and beyond to make sure we would feel safe in the streets and sights of India.
However, you can also reach Jaipur by plane. For that, you can fly to Jaipur’s International Airport (JAI).
Where to Stay in Jaipur?
For our stay in Jaipur, we picked the incredible Alsisar Haveli Heritage Hotel. The hotel is a traditional Haveli, which is a traditional townhouse or mansion. The building itself is incredibly spectacular, with numerous opulent decorations, so you will never tire of it. It also has a beautiful pool area, breakfast included, and of course, the mandatory AC in every room!
How to Get Around in Jaipur?
The best way to get around in Jaipur is by car. The sights you will see if you are following this Jaipur Itinerary are spread all throughout the city, so really the only viable option is to get around by car there.
Jaipur Itinerary – Day 1
Early Mornings at the Patrika Gate
Let’s start this Jaipur Itinerary with an absolute banger. The Patrika Gate is a beautiful place in the garden of a traffic circle in Jaipur, and with its pastel-colored decorations, it is one of the highlights when visiting Jaipur. Each section of the gate is decorated so beautifully that you could spend hours marveling at only one section at a time.
It is also one of the few places in this Jaipur Itinerary that have no entry costs, which also makes it one of the most frequented places in Jaipur. That’s why I must recommend visiting it as soon as the sun rises, to beat the crowds. When I was there, there were so many vendors, tourists, and wedding photoshoots happening at the same time, I was getting very close to feeling super claustrophobic.
Breakfast at the Alsisar Haveli
Once you finish marveling at the Patrika Gate, it is time to make use of the free breakfast you get at the Alsisar Haveli! Personally, I enjoyed it the most to get a fresh waffle every morning, but if you want your breakfast to be a little more Indian-style, make sure to go for the Dosas with dips.
Amer Fort
Full and refreshed, it is time for one of the most spectacular sights in all of Rajasthan, and this 2-Day Jaipur Itinerary. The Amer Fort is called this way because of its amber colour. As one of the typical Rajput forts, you are in for breathtaking architecture and delicate decorations as far as the eye can see. When visiting, you will pass courtyard after courtyard and learn more about the area and how the people who used to inhabit the fort would live there.
Amer Fort opens every day at 8:00 am. Therefore if you want to beat the crowds here, you can of course also skip breakfast and drive there directly after the Patrika Gate.
Stop at the Jal Mahal
Right on the way to the Hawa Mahal, there is one more short stop to make! The Jal Mahal is another beautiful palace to see in Jaipur, located in the middle of Man Sagar Lake. The interesting thing about it is that you can only watch it from the shore of the lake. That’s because the main part of the palace is flooded. However, it still remains a mesmerizing view!
Lunch or just a Drink at the Hawa Mahal
Once you have finished looking at all the courtyards of Amer Fort, it is time to visit one of the most iconic places in Jaipur, or even in the whole of India! The Hawa Mahal, also known as the Palace of Winds, is a gorgeous palace façade that I am sure you have seen on Instagram before. Although it is really just the palace’s facade, it is such a gorgeous view to have. It was built with 953 windows so the women living in the palace could see the pink city outside, without anyone being able to catch a glance of the royal women.
And while you can technically see it for free from the street, the best view of the Hawa Mahal is from the Tattoo Cafe & Lounge. They have a nice balcony from where you can see the Hawa Mahal, the best in case you want to take pictures. When getting there, make sure to look for the Tattoo Cafe & Lounge and don’t go to the other café that is close by. There, they will charge you an entry fee, and people reported it being very dirty.
Spa & Pool Time
Traveling India is a very intensive experience, and one thing that we noticed is that we got tired very early in the afternoon. Usually, I would be very eager to see as much as I can in my Jaipur Itinerary. But the truth is that at times, the Indian heat and food were equally hard on me. That’s why our afternoon was reserved for spa & pool time and making the most of our money spent on the Alsisar Haveli.
However, when you are still up for more exploring, check out the Nahargarh Fort and its iconic city wall!
Dinner at the Haveli
Refreshed and relaxed we had our dinner at the hotel that night. The restaurant at the Alsisar Haveli is a great place, and we were very lucky for the short travel time to get there (only walking down the stairs to be precise!)
Jaipur Itinerary – Day 2
Breakfast
After waking up and getting ready, the first thing you want to do is have your breakfast at the hotel restaurant. Personally, I love breakfast buffets, and especially in India, I had the experience that they really tried to make each and every single one as amazing as it could be.
Jaipur City Palace
The first thing you are going to see today on your Jaipur Itinerary is the incredible Jaipur City Palace. While you technically saw it already from the outside (Hawa Mahal), you are now going to see it from the inside. And it might be even more beautiful than the Palace of Winds.
Once the official residence of the royal family of Jaipur and the administrative headquarters for the rulers of Jaipur, the Jaipur City Palace is now a museum. And while it is still the royal family’s residence, you can visit many of the courtyards and admire the art and decorations of this magnificent place.
Within the Jaipur City Palace, you can explore 4 courtyards, all different in their colour scheme and decor. My favorite places were the Sarvato Bhadra, an open pavilion in the middle of the main courtyard, and the breathtaking gates with the famous peacock decorations. For an additional fee, you are also able to see even more rooms, such as the blue room of Jaipur.
Helpful Tips:
- The entry ticket to Jaipur City Palace is 1.000 Rupees, the additional price is 1.250 Rupees.
- During the day, it gets very hot in the Jaipur City Palace. Make sure to bring enough water to stay hydrated and wear SPF.
Gaitore Ki Chhatriyan
Once you finish marveling at all the colorful decorations of Jaipur City Palace, it is time to move to my favorite place in Jaipur! The royal tombs with their ornate domes are often overlooked by tourists, and that alone is very sad! The area is incredibly beautiful, with so many carvings, paintings, and decor to see. It is safe to say that it put a spell on me, as I could hardly look away from the domes. Divided into three courtyards, the domes made of marble are incredible to behold.
Helpful Tips:
- The entry ticket to the Gaitore Ki Chhatriyan is 30 Rupees.
- This place is stunning for taking pictures. But please be respectful about the fact, that this was once a place for funerals.
Lunch at Niros
By the time you are done with the Gaitore Ki Chhatriyan and Jaipur City Palace, I bet you are famished! For your lunch, I recommend going to Niros, a lovely restaurant in Jaipur, where you get the best local dishes. I had a Pindi Channa that was incredibly delicious!
Tailor
One thing Jaipur is quite famous for is its tailors. At these ateliers, you can have them make you your very own fitted clothing. Once you step inside one of those shops, you are greeted by eager salesmen and more variations of fabric than you have ever seen before. When you have decided on what to buy, one of the salesmen will take your measurements and then they will deliver your garments to your hotel once it is finished!
Albert Hall Museum or Pool Time
For us, exploring Jaipur City Palace and the Gaitore had already drained us a lot, so for that day. So we decided to call it a day and spend more time at the pool (we had to enjoy it twice, of course!). However, if you are still up to more exploring, check out the Albert Hall Museum, which is the oldest museum in Rajasthan.
And that’s a wrap! If you want to read more about my time in India, check out how you can spend a Day in New Delhi!
